On Saturday, April 23 at 10 am at the East Regional Library in Destrehan, speaker Michael Martin will provide a publishing account of his work, Appalachian Pastoral: Mountain Excursions, Aesthetic Visions, and the Antebellum Travel Narrative, and also make connections between Appalachian culture and Louisiana regional culture.
Martin will also provide general information about the research, writing, and publishing process.
His new book, Appalachian Pastoral, will be published in Spring 2022 by Clemson University Press. His book argues that nineteenth-century travel narratives into Appalachia deliberately incorporated British landscape aesthetics to make the area better understood to audiences living outside of Appalachia, even though the landscapes as described were not accurate.
Martin is an Associate Professor of English at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux.
